Data Provenance & Authoritative Sources

All classification and sizing data published on this registry is compiled directly from public domain sources and official agency releases. We maintain direct traceability to the following source registers:

U.S. Census Bureau: 2022 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) manuals, structure files, and official concordance tables (1997 through 2022).
U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA): Table of Small Business Size Standards (13 CFR § 121.201), incorporating all recent inflation adjustments.
U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA): 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) manual.
Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF): ISO 17442 Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) structure records and check digit algorithms.
Internal Revenue Service (IRS): Principal Business Activity (PBA) codes compiled from IRS Instructions for Form 1120/1040 Schedule C.

Methodology: Transitive Concordance Mapping

Because the legacy 1987 SIC system and the modern 2022 NAICS system represent business activities under different conceptual schemas, no direct census mapping exists between them.

To solve this, EntityCodes.org utilizes a transitive concordance mapping model. We chain the complete historical sequence of U.S. Census concordance files:

1987 SIC → 1997 NAICS → 2002 NAICS → 2007 NAICS → 2012 NAICS → 2017 NAICS → 2022 NAICS

Each concordant transition tracks its path provenance (e.g., whether the relationship is direct, partial, or split) and reports all unmapped codes to ensure complete transparency in data flow.

Registry Updates & Cadence

The registry is updated on a regular cadence to align with the federal registers:

NAICS updates: Re-compiled every five years following the U.S. Census Bureau publication schedule (next revision scheduled for 2027).
SBA Size Standard updates: Monitored monthly and updated immediately upon the publication of DLA/SBA rules in the Federal Register.
Validator schema checks: Validated offline against active ISO 7064 check digit algorithms and SAM.gov Base32 specifications.
